The business case is for the delivery of upgrades to the Gippsland Line to deliver additional services, improved reliability and resilience, and improved passenger experience.

The business case was accepted for Infrastructure Australia's assessment on 3 February 2020.

On 18 June 2020 Infrastructure Australia has concluded its independent evaluation of the Gippsland Line Upgrade project and has determined it will not include the project on the Infrastructure Australia Priority List at this time.
