This presentation to Ausrail by Michael Deegan of Infrastructure Australia discusses the role of public transport in transforming Australia's cities.
Mr Deegan discusses findings that the increase in population is seeing an equal increase in public transport use. However, there is a level of passenger dissatisfaction with the services on offer. He contends that, if public transport were improved, more people would use it.
Mr Deegan outlines areas for improvement in public transport and the need to change attitudes towards it. He holds that debate is required on the government roles in providing public transport and raises the need for a national public transport strategy. He claims that there is a need for leadership, not just funding, in order to develop the proposition for a national public transport strategy.
