On 27 July 2016, Infrastructure Australia assessed the Eyre Infrastructure Project as a Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List.

The project proposes the construction of a deep water port at Cape Hardy and a 148 heavy haul standard gauge rail connection from this port to a proposed iron ore mine ‘The Central Eyre Iron Project’. The proponent, Iron Road Limited, will fully fund the project; and stated a public net benefit to Australia of $3.8 billion.
