The Barron River bridge is located on the Kennedy Highway, which is the primary road link between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands. 

The Queensland Government report that the bridge is at the end of its structural and economic life. Inspections in 2020 identified structural deficiencies, leading to operational restrictions, including load restrictions. Recent weather events have further restricted operations, significantly impacting the transport network and requiring major detours during closures. 

The proposal aims to improve travel reliability, road capacity, freight access, and safety by providing a long-term solution which addresses structural issues.
