The business case is for a new 16-kilometre motorway to connect the Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys Creek with Sydney’s motorway network. The project is part of the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and it aims to increase road capacity and reduce congestion and travel times in the future.

The business case was accepted for Infrastructure Australia's evaluation on 20 March 2020.

On 18 June 2020, M12 Motorway Project was added to the Infrastructure Priority List as a High Priority Project.
