On 7 September 2016, infrastructure Australia positively assessed the M80 Ring Road Upgrade project in Melbourne, Victoria as a High Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List.

This project proposes to upgrade three sections of freeway totalling 14.3 kilometres, widen the existing road to a minimum of three through-lanes in each direction, and implement intelligent transport systems (ITS) infrastructure.
