In 2013, Infrastructure Australia recommended that the Melbourne Metro project be included on the 2013 Infrastructure Priority List as ‘Threshold’, upon three conditions.

The project includes the creation of two 7.3 kilometre rail tunnels from west of South Kensington and east of South Yarra. The project seeks to ease pressure on the congested inner core rail network, and provide capacity for an additional 60,000 passengers per hour.
