The Walkerston Bypass Project is for a 10 km link between the Peak Downs Highway and the Mackay Ring Road to bypass Walkerston and provide a more efficient link from the northern Bowen Basin to Mackay. 

The business case was accepted for Infrastructure Australia's evaluation on 26 June 2019.

On 3 December 2019, the Walkerston Bypass Project was added to the Infrastructure Priority List as a Priority Project.
