On 14 June 2017, Infrastructure Australia added the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project to the Infrastructure Priority List as a High Priority Project.

The rail project will deliver 30.5 kilometres of metro rail between Chatswood and Bankstown, in order to mitigate issues of congestion at peak times. The project involves the creation of new underground metro stations in the CBD and North Sydney.
